Install Maya for Linux (Ubuntu)
Today I have successfully installed Maya 2008 for Linux in my Ubuntu system.
I followed zardostechmage’s guide to install in my Ubuntu 8.04 Hardy Heron. Should work in previous Ubuntu versions as well (Gutsy, Feisty, etc).
Eveything went well with some minor tweaks for the installation to work well. I have taken some notes of what to be done after installation.
- Mental Ray temporary folder
You need to create /usr/tmp folder for mental ray’s frame buffer.
sudo mkdir /usr/tmp sudo chmod 777 /usr/tmp
Now mental ray’s frame buffer should work.
- Strange “X” Mouse
Sometimes the cursor would turn to black “X” cursor, but it really is just the display. Use this to fix it. (in my case, sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t)export MAYA_MMSET_DEFAULT_XCURSOR=1
- Garbaged Display
This is due to the incompatibilty of maya with GLX/AIGLX composite. Edit /etc/X11/xorg.conf and disable composition effectgksudo gedit /etc/X11/xorg.conf
add the following entry :
Section "Extensions" Option "Composite" "Disable" EndSection
Then start and enjoy using Maya

wah install di ubuntu ? perlu repository banyak gak ? gw gak bisa install ubuntu, since i cannot make the sound to work well. so i installed it on my Opensuse 10.3 64bit, and it runs smoothly. just make sure you read readme first from a to z. tapi udah lupa2 gini ama maya T_T wew…yg gw pelajarin lupa semua… hiks. kebanyakan ngeblender sepertinya

gak perlu repository sama sekali kok. Kalo di ubuntu tinggal convert .rpm nya ke .deb pake alien, terus jalanin aja installasinya.
Wah kemaren sempet nyobain openSuse 10.3 juga, tapi berat dan kurang cocok aja. jadinya install ubuntu aja

i haven’t got the chance to play around with ubuntu. yesterday i just got my copy of kubuntu 8.04 from my cousin and hopefully one of these days i will have the time to install it.
last time i tried Maya on linux was Maya 5.0 on Slackware 9 (my fave distro). Maya have issues with Klipper on KDE 3.x. so if you use KDE make sure you disable Klipper
cheers,
P

hello Vlad,
From what I searched, apparently your error is related to license file.
Try copy the aw.dat to the /var/flexlm directory and make sure it has read access to the user.

Hi
I don,t know if you can help me out but when I run Maya in the Terminal I get the licensing wizard for maya. When I say install from file and point to the aw.dat file that I created in windows it tells me that FEATURE MayaUnltd has invalid host identifier of 0014c141a5e0. (line 1). I got me ethernet address from connection information window of my internet connection.
I am totally stuck and hope you can help me out.
Thanks
